German GASTrointestinal CanceR RegistrY (GASTRY)

Translational research project for advanced tumors

About the project

Despite advances, standard chemotherapies often remain ineffective for many GI tumors. The focus of research is therefore shifting towards targeted therapies that utilize specific molecular properties. The combination of molecular biology methods with bioinformatics shows great potential that has not yet been sufficiently tapped and allows an optimistic outlook for the improvement of tumor therapies.

One of the pilot projects in this field is the GASTRY study, in which the Personalized Medicine research area is participating. The aim is to develop an electronic platform for recording molecular biological, clinical and patient-reported outcome (PRO) data for various gastrointestinal tumor diseases. The aim of the registry is to ensure the long-term monitoring and documentation of the treatment of patients with advanced or metastatic gastrointestinal tumors and at the same time to analyze data from the clinical care reality.

Participation of the Tumor Biology & Research Department

In the Tumor Biology & Research Lab, various biomaterials (tissue, blood and stool) from the same patient are collected, processed and stored at various points during the course of treatment. At the same time, patient-derived organoids are cultured and characterized through various functional studies such as immunostaining and drug sensitivity testing. This will generate a comprehensive and well-characterized living, time-course biobank, which – together with the tissues from the Miti-SECC project – will form the basis for translational research.
